Product Overview

KIT: Dremel® 290 with 2x tungsten carbide fossil preparation nibs - 1x long and 1x short

The Dremel® 290 is a popular choice in fossil preparation. Amazing work can be done with an electric engraver, for a fraction of the price of air tools. This kit comes with two of our own tungsten carbide styli optimised for fossil preparation.

  • 1x Short (best for rock removal and more powerful) - 21mm total length
  • 1x Long (best for precision work) - 30mm total length

The Dremel® 290 has a reciprocating or percussive action (the nib moves backwards and forwards) which is much better suited to fossil preparation than the rotary Dremels.

  • Variable stroke length (1-5)
  • Soft grip for comfort
  • Replaceable carbide for use on a wide variety of materials
  • Separate on/off switch to keep depth setting
  • 6,000 SPM (strokes per minute) Motor

Working with an electric engraver on fossils is slower and less comfortable than with an air pen, but is a much more affordable start to the hobby.

For the greatest success in fossil prep, try to use a sandbag or shock absorbing surface, and use tips specially designed for fossil preparation (in this kit!). The needle pointed shape and small diameter of our ZOIC PalaeoTech nibs are designed and optimised for fossil preparation and rock removal. You'll find that you can work more quickly and more accurately with the right kit.

We use the same top quality, high grade tungsten carbide in our Dremel nibs as we do in our air tools. Tungsten carbide is the material of choice as it is very resistant to abrasion (rocks are an abrasive surface), meaning your nib will stay sharp for a long time and wear more slowly than steel or other metals.

Also comes with a 3mm carbide tipped nib and a lettering stencil (for use as an engraver).

    Dremel 290 Engraver

Posted by Stephen on 28th Jun 2020

I purchased this to get some quick, cheap and easy prepping capacity beyond dental picks and scalpel. It has exceeded my expectations and I don't know why we don't hear more about the usefulness of this kind of tool. It is vastly improved with the Zoic nibs supplied. As my only air pen (so far!) is a Microraptor for fine finishing work, the Dremel is a very useful fuss-free way of removing matrix before using the air pen. But it is very precise (with the Zoic nib) and surprisingly powerful and needs as much respect as an air pen in use. In fact it would be an excellent practice tool before investing in an air pen, but it is a snip at the price on its own account.

    Dremel 290 fossil nibs x 2

We have had great fun with the nibs, the longer nib is fantastic at fine work and the smaller is great at removing harder rock. Really sturdy nibs. Thank you!

    Dremel Engraver

I bought this as my first foray into fossil prep. I ordered it on Wednesday and it arrived today (Monday) which in light of the current restrictions etc I thought was great. The engraver is perfect for a beginner and the nibs that comes with it are great. I had a query about it so sent a message to the Instagram page and got a very quick response. Great product and great company!

    Dremel and new fossil tips

Posted by Paul Morgan on 21st Jun 2020

Absolutely one my best purchases. A real game changer. The long and short tips turn the dremel into a fine hand tool. I now am achieving genuine results rather than destroying delicate fossils! Great stuff Mihai!
